Hostalric castle we see today was built on an outcrop of basalt during the 18th century, on the site of a previous fortification already documented as far back as 1145. One of the main reasons for its construction was to maintain control over the former highroad, a major communication route of the time.

Hostalric Castle of the modern era was designed by Francisco de Santa Cruz, a military engineer in the service of Archduke Carlos. Work on the permanent fortification began between 1712 and 1713, as a consequence of the War of the Spanish Succession. Nevertheless, the main works to make it suitable for use as a fortress were carried out in 1794 and 1795, during the War of the Pyrenees.

Hostalric castle is a military fortress build on uneven terrain. The grounds follow a system of bastions, and therefore boast the typical defence elements of the period such as the interior quarters, moat, exterior works and covered path. The Cavaller, the highest part, occupies the space of the old castle of Cabrera.
