Monastery of Breda

The 11th-century Benedictine Monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda was the religious and spiritual centre of the powerful Vescomtat de Cabrera. The town of Breda grew around the monastery complex, which included the church, cloister, service rooms, monks’ rooms and abbot’s palace.

The present-day building is composed of three elements of great cultural interest: the 11th-century five-storey bell tower, standing 32 metres tall; the Gothic church, dating from the 14th – 15th century, with a nave measuring 33 x 12.5 metres; and the 15th-century abbey courtyard, one of the best-preserved medieval courtyards in Catalonia.
