Hostalric Castle is built on a stone hill of basaltic origin. There is evidence that a fortification already existed there in 1145, but the castle that has survived to this day was built in the 18th century. One of the main reasons for its construction was to maintain control over a major communication route such as the Ral road.

The original design of the modern fortification of Hostalric was the work of Francisco de Santa Cruz, a military engineer in the service of Archduke Carlos, and the first works of permanent fortifications took place during 1712 and 1713 as a result of the War of Succession During 1716 and 1718, improvement works continued to be carried out at the fortress. But the main works to leave the fortification in usable condition were between 1794 and 1795, during the Great War.

Hostalric Castle is a military fortification built on irregular ground. The entire enclosure has a bastion system, where we find the typical defensive elements of the time, such as an inner enclosure, a moat, external works and a covered path. El Cavaller, the highest part, occupies the space of the old Cabrera castle.
