The defence wall dates from the 14th century. It was built along the route<\/strong> of the former medieval highway, using basalt stone <\/strong> quarried from the castle hill.<\/p>\n\n

Today, some 600m <\/strong> of the wall ares till conserved. The wall is high and is crowned<\/strong> with square merlons. The towers are connected by a walkway<\/strong>. The towers are cylindrical and semi-cylindrical in form. Ten of them have been preserved, included the Convent Tower<\/a> and Friars<\/a> Tower, which were part of an outer enclosure. The Barcelona Gate<\/a> is one of the four entrances to the walled town.<\/p>\n\n
